About Formula Student

The goal of Formula Student is to design, construct and introduce a formula racing car to a conceptual market and to race that car on several international racing events with the help of all members who have a legal student status. The organization ensures the team members gain valuable insights in their field of expertise and have the opportunity to build channels which enable smooth communication between the students of Formula Student and the supporter companies of the movement. These competitions are held in several countries across Europe, the most notable ones are Germany, England, Austria, and Spain.

The Race

An average Formula Student competition takes up to four days, which consists of two days of scrutineering and assuring that the car complies with various security rules. If it meets all these regulations, the vehicle will be allowed to take apart in the next two days of events. These can be sorted into two main groups: static and dynamic.

Static Events

Static events are presentations which include defending the engineering design, presenting business plan and cost analysis. These give 40% of the total scores.

Dynamic Events

Dynamic events include the “Acceleration”, the so called “Skid Pad” which tests the suspension dynamics of the car on an “8” shaped track, and the “Autocross” which examines the car’s performance on a specific section of the racetrack during measured lap time. Finally, the “Endurance” event where the overall time performance and fuel efficiency of the vehicle are taken under scope on a 22 km long track.

What we do

The team members gather extensive understanding and experience in the automotive industry and various fields of motorsport. They learn the true meaning of teamwork, as well as use their knowledge in practice. The project provides opportunity to become familiar with the usage of the most advanced technologies, as well as offering an indirect way to the industrial companies for the students who are involved.

HOW MUCH TIME DOES IT TAKE TO BE PART OF THE TEAM?

There is no minimum time requirement to join the team. However, experience has shown that 3-4 hours per week during the training period is essential to acquire the necessary skills. However, the time spent will increase in direct proportion to the level of tasks you undertake. Most of the tasks, however, can be done from home - after work, classes or other activities.

IS IT WORTH JOINING THE TEAM IN YOUR FIRST YEAR?

An average university course is 7 semesters. You can only join a Formula Student team during this period. As you are a student during this time, we do not expect any professional knowledge, just an open mind and teamwork. So there's no point in procrastinating and joining in the 3rd or 4th semester, because you can learn everything and have more time to work in the team.

BESIDES BEING PART OF THE TEAM, HOW CAN I COMPLETE MY STUDIES? WON'T I SLIP BECAUSE OF IT?

In short, no! Because our team is a small community, you will find help with your studies that will help rather than hinder you. You can do an internship with us and find a thesis/TDK topic while working in the team. This way you can work on your car and progress with your studies in parallel without spending extra time.

AS AN ECONOMIC STUDENT, WHAT KIND OF TASKS CAN I DO AND HOW MUCH TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE IS EXPECTED?

Like a real racing team, we need management. To run the team properly, it is essential to manage purchases, finances and marketing. In addition to this, we have to prepare presentations on various economic topics for the Formula Student competitions and present them there. Technical knowledge is not at all necessary, but if you are interested in any topic you can join any department.

WHAT KNOWLEDGE CAN I GAIN AS A MEMBER OF THE TEAM?

One of the important tasks of Formula Student is to train students to put theoretical knowledge into practice, preferably following the current and latest trends. This provides competitive knowledge that you can only get in very few places outside the industrial environment.

CAN I EARN MONEY DOING THIS?

Yes! Within the framework of the team's own scholarship programme, members can receive a scholarship each semester in proportion to their diligence and time commitment. In addition, you can apply for several scholarships, e.g. Universitas Miskolcensis, ÚNKP, National Scholarship for Higher Education...etc., which can provide an extra 40-50 or 100 thousand HUF per month.

WHO CAN APPLY FOR THE TEAM?

Anyone with an active university student status.

HOW CAN I APPLY FOR THE TEAM AND WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE?

If you follow our social media pages or our website you will see that we hold at least 1 recruitment period every year, for which you can apply online by filling out a google form. Once the recruitment period has closed, we will meet for a personal interview. If you miss this but are determined to join us, don't be afraid to contact us, as there is a possibility for an individual application process.

WHAT ARE MY OBLIGATIONS IF I AM PART OF THE TEAM?

Members' responsibilities vary depending on their position. There are more and less responsible duties. The higher your position, the more people or major parts depend on you, so you will have more obligations towards others and the whole team. There is basically no cost to joining the team, your first year will be almost entirely about learning and you will always have someone to mentor you in your work.

INTERESTED IN DRIVING, ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A PILOT?

We do not have a dedicated pilot position. If that's the only thing that motivates you to join, we're not the place for you. However, we organise "fun-drive" days where everyone who put the work into the car has the opportunity to try it out.
